What is a Dental Implant?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made out of titanium that replace a missing tooth or teeth. These implants are screws placed directly into the jaw bone to serve as an artificial root to hold your new tooth in place. After the patient is fully healed and the implant is secure, a prosthetic tooth is attached to the screw. For a single implant, the process can usually be completed fairly easily, with relatively little pain.

Dental implants are often seen as the superior alternative to dentures or other replacement options because they are extremely natural looking as well as permanent. You care for them much like you would your natural teeth, and no one will likely notice the difference.

When a patient needs multiple dental implants, including full mouth tooth replacement, the process becomes more complicated and painful, and the patient may wish to consider other options. But, for those who are only missing a single tooth, a dental implant is by far the most popular solution.

What Are My Options?

They are expensive, but because the benefits greatly outweigh those of other treatment options, getting a dental implant is generally the best course of action for a patient that needs to replace a missing tooth. Still, we understand that you need to make the right choice for you.

If you have a missing tooth, you have four main options.

Option 1: Do Nothing

If you choose to do nothing at this time, the cost down the road can be substantial. You could be looking at a cost of $10,000+ for orthodontics to straighten out the teeth, implant, abutment and crown, bone grafting and possible sinus lift to replace lost bone.

Option 2: Dental Implant

The bad news is that a dental implant is the most expensive option, but the good news?  It is the most effective, functional and aesthetically pleasing treatment for a single misisng tooth by far. A dental implant will keep the bone in that area of the jaw from atrophy. It helps maintain face shape and prevents “sunken face”. The implant will prevent surrounding teeth from shifting, and the chances of losing additional teeth decline. It will keep the teeth from shifting, and will prevent any future need to cut down the adjacent teeth. A dental implant is the nearest thing to a natural tooth available today.

Option 3: Dental Bridge

The good news is that a dental bridge is less expensive than a dental implant. But, that is the only advantage. You will continue to lose bone in the affected area over time. Food will get caught in the hard to reach parts of the bridge and, if not cleaned properly, the bridge may need frequent replacement. In addition, to secure the bridge, the adjacent teeth must be cut down in order to be used as anchors for the appliance. Why cut down two good teeth if we don’t have to?

Option 4: The Removable Partial Denture (RPD)

A partial denture is your least expensive replacement option for a missing tooth, but it’s also the most uncomfortable. You won’t be able to chew your food naturally, and you’ll have a big, bulky piece of plastic sitting in your mouth all day.
